Alivio

“Alivio” is a global appeal to governments and institutions to look beyond economic statistics and political assurances and see what everyday life actually feels like for the people living beneath those numbers. Rather than making its argument through speeches, the song enters ordinary homes, grocery stores, markets, streets, and kitchens across different parts of the world.

In the United States, a grocery basket becomes a measure of financial pressure as food and medicine compete for limited money. In Nigeria, transportation, electricity, food, and wages determine what can actually make it home. In Haiti, damaged roads, unstable housing, changing protections, and a leaking roof show how insecurity can persist long after a crisis leaves the headlines. In Latin America, heat, rent, school expenses, food prices, and exhausting journeys home reveal another version of the same struggle.

The recurring chorus challenges the distance between official improvement and lived reality. Governments may announce that “the storm is breaking,” but the song repeatedly asks what recovery means if families are still standing in the water. Images of dawn, rain, broken roofs, empty containers, baskets, soil, and sunlight turn economic ideas into experiences that can be seen and felt.

The final chorus does not reject progress or demand that everyone experience identical circumstances. It asks that improvement reach beyond reports and averages until it can be recognized at the dinner table, inside the home, and in the lives of families themselves.

The song’s message: Progress cannot be measured only by improving numbers. If governments say a better day is arriving, ordinary people should eventually be able to feel that change in their food, shelter, work, security, and daily lives. If the dawn is truly breaking, its light should reach everyone.

ZSORAYII holds a long grocery receipt beneath the title “ALIVIO,” looking upward toward a bright opening in storm clouds. Around her, families and workers across the United States, Nigeria, Haiti, India, and Latin America face rising food, medicine, housing, and everyday living costs, while government figures gather in a gleaming world above. The contrasting sunlight and rain symbolize the divide between promises of economic relief and the hardships people continue to experience.

Fluorescent canopy buzzes overhead,

paper anchor folded in my palm.

Rice holds ground, the orchard retreats,

medicine keeps watch beside the bread.

Traded sunrise for copper, counted every grain,

still the basket rises almost bare.

Receipt uncoils across the counter,

scanner tolls and never asks who eats.

You claim the storm is breaking,

Tell me where the clearing begins,

Look beyond the quiet numbers,

If dawn is truly breaking,

Òwúrọ̀ dé kí iná ìdáná tó jí,

Ìkòkò ṣófo ń mí ní igun ilé,

Ọjà ń wọn ọ̀la wa ní ọkà kọ̀ọ̀kan,

You claim the storm is breaking,

Tell me what harvest means,

Look beyond the quiet numbers,

If dawn is truly breaking,

Syèl fè a tonbe sou do kay la,

li kite ekriti li sou tout mi yo.

Wout la fann lòt bò mòn nan,

men pen an tande bri a byen lwen.

Yon papye blan mete pri sou kay la,

yon lòt retire pwoteksyon li.

Bòl la deplase anba gout plafon an,

kabann nan deplase, men kay la toujou pote non li.

You claim the storm is breaking,

Tell me what shelter means,

Look beyond the quiet numbers,

If dawn is truly breaking,

You claim the storm is breaking,

Tell me what plenty means,

Look beyond the quiet numbers,

If dawn is truly breaking,

You claim the storm is breaking,

Our baskets gather shadows,

Look beyond the quiet numbers,

If dawn is truly breaking,

You claim the storm is breaking,

If tomorrow carries sunlight,
